Gwendolyn was looking for a natural soft-looking custom concrete counter top in various shadings of white which would flow naturally in the small kitchen space made available in her home.
Surface Design Systems utilized a concept from Japan that encompasses and defines some of the very qualities that characterize concrete. It is known as Wabi-Sabi: the suggestions of natural process visually intimate a reduction of the physical distance between one thing and another. This technique uses earthy materials which appear not far removed from their original condition and results in a finished product which is simple in appearance without crossing over into ostentatious austerity.
Wabi-Sabi origin derives in part from Taoist and Zen notions about simplicity, naturalness, and acceptance of reality. These suggestions of natural process are the principles that underline the way we approach concrete aesthetics at Surface Design Systems.
